But first, I’d like to take you a trip back down “nappy hair” memory lane. You see, for as long as I can remember, I’ve always had respect for my hair and it’s natural kinkiness. Unfortunately, my mother and sister had other plans for my hair. You will enjoy reading about my days in the “beauty chair from hell!” and other crazy experiences with my hair.
You will also discover what growing dreadlocks is all about. Through my own personal experiences, I’ve discovered that growing dreadlocks is all about knowing the natural texture of your hair. Dreadlocks are my vision of hope, faith, and success. Their presence is responsible for wonderful positive changes in my life. My thinking, determination, spirituality, faith, and hunger for success are stronger than ever.
For more than fifteen years I have allowed my hair to naturally develop into dreadlocks. They have created a unique style –- some are long, some are short, with split ends, without split ends, and all thin. No chemicals, dyes, hair extensions, or much time is spent on them other than weekly cleansing.
Many believe dreadlocks to be a fashion statement or a charm to lure women. Others see them as radical symbols against society or the racial inequalities of the system. My dreadlocks symbolize love and respect; a declaration my life will be a success with an image of my conscious.
In the early stages of growing dreadlocks, my closest relatives and friends shunned away. They did not understand what I was accomplishing or believed I was taking “Black Culture” too far.
To me, it was just hair, my hair; to family and friends, it was embarrassing to walk into public with “nappy” hair, especially with a Bachelors of Arts degree in computer science.
Growing dreadlocks naturally has not been an easy ride. Fortunately, a plan of action was created to stay motivated and moving in the right direction. I listened more, talked less, read great writers, and developed an aggressive health plan. As my dreadlocks developed, every aspect of my life improved. My family and friends now admire my courage.
Learning how to grow dreadlocks was difficult and confusing. Information from hair-stylists, books, and magazines gave several options: twist it, put bee’s wax in it, or not wash it for long lengths of time.
None of these processes appealed to me. I placed my faith in the Universe and let nature take its course. Months later, dreadlocks came into my life.
Society’s views are changing. However, those wishing to grow dreadlocks may have difficulty finding information to help them. By following a few simple tips, anyone can grow dreadlocks. In most cases, one does not need to fight the system, drop out of society, change jobs, or move to a tropical island.
Don’t Worry, Be NAPPY! provides information, techniques, and ideas to help anyone grow dreadlocks. Everything essential to living a successful life is covered, including positive motivation tips, good health advice, managing finances, finding a job, and much more.
Growing dreadlocks takes courage, confidence, and a very positive mind. It is a wonderful and soulful journey into ones self. As with anything in life; faith, belief, persistence, and determination are keys to success with dreadlocks..
This book is a gift to all who dare to define an image and life worth living by their convictions. You will notice several quotes from many of Bob Marley’s songs. His lyrics inspired and motivated me to “grow my deadlocks and not be afraid of the wolfpack.”
Equally important are the words of Les Brown, “The Motivator”, and others who have dedicated their lives to helping others live their dreams.
It is my hope this book will help bring more joy, satisfaction, self-appreciation, courage to seek goals, and beauty into your life.
